The Old Testament, which is written mostly in ancient Hebrew, but some books also in ancient Aramaic languages, in the period from the 8th c. B.C.E. to the 1st century m. uh The New Testament, written in the Koine variant of the ancient Greek language 1-2 c. C.E. The name of the Bible comes from the Greek word βιβλία (biblia), which in translation from the ancient Greek language means 'books'. Christians believe that the texts of the Bible are inspired by God and through them one can get to know the God who created everything. The Bible is the most widely distributed book in the world and it is believed that more than 7 billion copies of the Bible have been sold or distributed to date. The Bible has been at least partially translated into more than 3,600 languages. Biblical history confirms the authenticity and reliability of the Bible.

For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one
smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.

Gospel of Matthew 5:18

OPEN in eBIBLE

The word Bible is used as the name of a collection of books to refer to the sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity, and some less common religions. The Christian Bible contains the Old Testament (the books about the life of the Jewish people and their relationship with God before the birth of Christ) and the New Testament (the books about the life of Jesus Christ, as well as some epistles and the book of Revelation). Though this isn’t a complete translation of the Bible, it is remarkably intact and mostly complete. It’s missing most of Genesis, Hebrews, and Revelations. Today, the Aleppo Codex is housed at the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

Book of Genesis 1:11

OPEN in eBIBLE

The Leningrad Codex, written in Hebrew and dated 11th c. Later in the 16th century several texts of the Lord's Prayer, as well as readings from the Gospels and letters, have also been published. The first book of the Bible that was completely translated into Latvian was the words of Solomon in the translation of Juris Mancels, which was published in Riga in 1638. Certain parts of the Bible have been translated by pastor Jānis Reiters in the 17th century. The first complete edition of the Bible in Latvian, translated by Ernst Glick, was published in 1694.

The Word became flesh, and lived among us. Charles XI granted 7500 dalers for the translation and publication of the Latvian Bible. For the first needs, the king gave 3,000 dalers to General Superintendent Fisher. Other translators were also involved and helped E. Glick during the process of translating the first Latvian Bible. Starting from 1682, his assistant and secretary was the student Christian Bartholomew Witten, who also later became a pastor. This translation was to some extent influenced by the Bible translated into German by Martin Luther and also based on the texts translated into Latvian by his predecessors, mainly the previous translations of Georg (Juris) Mancel and Christoph Furecker, however, most of the Old Testament texts and apocrypha were translated into Latvian for the first time.

No one has seen God at any time. There were also certain obstacles and difficulties in the translation process - in 1683 the first original translation version of the New Testament was rejected in conference by Kurzemes (Courland) pastors and within a year and a half its text was reworked and the final translation of the New Testament was completed in 1685, while the translation of the Old Testament was completed in 1689. The printing of the Bible was undertaken by Johan Georgs Wilkens in Riga. It took a very long time to print such a large volume of books in the printing press of that time. Although year 1689 is printed on the title page of the Bible, the press continued to work on the apocryphal books as late as 1692, and the printing of the Bible was fully completed in 1694, when King Charles XI signed permission to distribute the entire Bible.

He said to him, "Most certainly, I tell you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Gospel of John 1:51

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The first edition of the Latvian Bible, 1694 (picture from the Aluksne Ernst Glick Bible Museum). 1,500 copies were printed and issued of the first edition of the Latvian Bible. The first 250 copies, according to the order of the general superintendent Johann Fischer, were distributed free of charge to churches, schools and certain individuals, while the remaining copies went on sale - at first for 5 dalers, then for 3 dalers. Book sales and distribution were relatively slow and most of these first 1,500 published Bibles remained in storage in the Riga Dome Cathedral warehouse, most of which perished in the great flood that occurred in Riga in 1702. When the printing of second Latvian Bible edition had already begun in 1739, about 100 Bibles were still left from the first batch, which at that time were sold for 1 daler per piece, but later all unsold books were distributed to churches for free.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Gospel of John 2:19

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The first edition of the Latvian Bible, 1694 (picture from the Aluksne Ernst Glick Bible Museum). The first proposals for a new edition of the Latvian Bible appeared after the Vidzeme region visit of Nikolaus Ludwig, Reichsgraf von Zinzendorf, the founder of the Christian Protestant mission movement Moravian Brethren, in 1729. The start of this work was coordinated in Riga in 1736 and it took place under the supervision of the general superintendent Johan Benjamin Fischer (son of Johan Fischer), who was an active supporter of the movement of Moravian Church in Latvia. In 1845, the printing plates of the edition were acquired by Jelgava publishing house "J.F.Steffenhagen and Son" (J. F. Steffenhagen und Sohn) and the printing of the Bible continued for several more years until the printing plates completely wore out.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Gospel of John 3:18

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The fifth edition of the Latvian Bible, 1854 (picture from the Aluksne Ernst Glick Bible Museum). In 1844, the theology professor of Tarbatu (present day Tartu) University, Dr. Kārlis Krišjānis Ulmanis is elected as the head of the Riga Bible Society. Initially, he undertook to re-translate the Bible into Latvian and supplement it with explanations (commentaries) so that it would be easier for readers to understand it, but due to his busy schedule, he had to abandon this ambitious goal. However, he later managed to find time to revise the text version of the Bible published in 1739. The corrections were not too extensive and mainly concerned the order of words in the sentences, so this edition differed from the previous ones with its easy-to-read and pleasantly fluent language.

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Gospel of John 3:19

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The fifth edition of the Latvian Bible, 1854 (picture from the Aluksne Ernst Glick Bible Museum) was printed in Riga in 1854 by Ludwig Hartung's publishing house and in comparison, to previous editions, it was in a larger format. A significant edition of the New Testament of the Bible in Latvian is the New Testament of Prelate Vincents Strelēvics, a Catholic priest who is born in Aizpute, published it in exile in Germany in 1947. The New Testament was translated into Latvian by Vincents Strelēvics from Latin, from the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible, which was previously translated from the original languages of the Bible. Translation work took several years in the Capuchin monastery in Burghausen. This edition with the support of the Vatican had several reprints and became the only Bible text in Latvian that is officially recognized by the Catholic Church at the time. It became the spiritual support for Latvian Catholic families in the difficult post-war period. Explanations or commentaries are also added to the texts to make it easier for the reader to perceive and understand it.

Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Gospel of John 5:24

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The New Testament, translated from the Latin text by prelate Vincents Strelēvics, 1947 (picture from the Latvian Bible Foundation archive). Bible, Latvian Bible Society, 2012 (picture from the Latvian Bible Foundation archive). The idea of translating the Bible into Latvian once more directly from original languages appeared already after the founding of the Latvian Bible Society. Work on this project began in 1995 and at first it was led by pastor Guntis Kalme but later on it was taken over by theologian Juris Cālītis. The project was mainly supported by the United Bible Societies and the Swedish Bible Society, as well as other contributors. This translation is considered to be the first ecumenical translation of the Bible into Latvian. Representatives of basically all Latvian Christian denominations as well as many other organizations were involved in its creation. In this edition emphasis is placed on the simplicity of the language used in the biblical text, so that it is easy for the reader to read and understand it.

Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

Gospel of John 6:47

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The ninth edition of the Latvian Bible (also called the new or third translation of the Bible into Latvian). This is the third most important edition of the Bible in the Latvian language after the first edition of the Latvian Bible translated by E. Glick in 1694 and the second edition of the Latvian translation of the Bible made in exile in 1965. The new translation was published in two versions. One of them has 1,272 pages and includes 66 canonical books of the Bible. The second has 2,637 pages and includes also the deuterocanonical books (also called the Apocrypha of the Old Testament), this version of the Bible has a total of 82 books. To make this text more accessible to today readers, the Latvian Bible Union created a new 8th edition of E.Glick's text in 2016, which can be read in modern Latvian writing print.

AND THIS GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE PREACHED IN ALL THE WORLD FOR A WITNESS UNTO ALL NATIONS; AND THEN SHALL THE END COME.

The Gospel of Matthew 24:14

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The 8th edition of the Latvian Bible translated by E.Glick in modern writing. In this new text of the 8th edition, old words of the ancient Latvian language have been replaced as much as possible with words that are used today. Personal names and place-names are used according to modern language usage. Pronouns have been capitalized where the meaning has required it. On the other hand, the sentence structure of the text has not been changed.

AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, GO YE INTO ALL THE WORLD, AND PREACH THE GOSPEL TO EVERY CREATURE.

The Gospel of Mark 16:15

OPEN in eBIBLE

History of the Latvian Bible

The 8th edition of the Latvian Bible translated by E.Glick in modern writing.
